Do menopause supplements actually work?
Our menopause nutritional therapist Thalia weighs in and explains how supplements can support you through perimenopause and menopause, which nutrients may help, and why personalised nutrition matters.
1. Do menopause supplements actually work?
As a registered nutritional therapist of more than 16 years and as a specialist in perimenopause and menopause, I know this life stage hits differently for every woman. I’ve seen first-hand how the right nutrition and lifestyle changes can meaningfully support women through the transition.
So, do menopause supplements actually work? The answer is personal. The question isn’t just what’s in the supplement, but what the woman taking it actually needs.
As registered nutritional therapists, we know that no single perimenopause or menopause supplement will be right for everyone. Not every woman needs a menopause supplement, and what one woman needs may be very different to her friend or sister.
So, we always start by finding out more. How are you feeling today? How have you been feeling recently? What do you need support with? How can we help you?
Because we don’t start with the supplements, we start with you.
2. Supplements are one part of the picture
Menopause isn’t a nutrient deficiency. It is a transition. Some women sail through it with little trouble; for others it can be all-consuming and overwhelming. We are there for every woman, offering bespoke guidance throughout.
We are often asked what the best supplements are for perimenopause and menopause, but as nutritional therapists, we don’t start with supplements. We start with food. We ask about diet and always ensure women leave with practical, achievable ways to better nourish themselves day to day. We also look at movement, sleep quality and stress. These are the foundations we encourage women to build upon in order to feel their best.
Supplements can’t replace a balanced diet. But they can offer valuable support alongside these foundations, when and if needed. They should be considered and personal. Just one part of the picture.
This approach is reflected in the NHS and NICE guidelines, which recommend getting most of the vitamins and minerals we need through a healthy, balanced diet, not through supplementation.
3. Which nutrients can help?
It depends on the individual. We often ask if you’ve had recent blood tests and look at your diet and health history. A vegetarian or vegan, for example, may need additional B12; while others may have a history of low vitamin D or struggle to get enough Iron from their diet, particularly if they’re experiencing heavy periods.
Magnesium is popular, too. Many women in both perimenopause and menopause tell us they struggle to sleep as well as they used to. We’ll talk first about how to support better sleep - good sleep hygiene, what you eat in the evening, whether you are on HRT and whether that’s been helpful - and then we’ll consider whether supplements have a role.
4. More isn’t always better
When choosing a supplement, it can be tempting to compare labels and assume the higher dose must be the best. But at Wild Nutrition, that’s not how we assess a formula.
NRVs (which used to be listed as Recommended Daily Amounts) are guidelines showing how much of a vitamin or mineral a single serving provides compared with the daily amount recommended for the average adult. They’re useful for understanding how a supplement contributes to your daily nutrient needs, but they don’t account for what you’re already getting from your diet, or your genetics, health history and individual nutritional needs.
So, rather than looking at quantity alone, we also consider the quality and form of the nutrients and how they’ve been formulated.
We believe nutrients work better as part of a food system than in isolation. We call it our Food-Grown® standard. Every formula begins with carefully selected nutrients. Some originate from food or natural sources, others do not, but all are chosen for their quality.
What makes Food-Grown® unique is what we do next. We introduce these nutrients into a food system, such as baker's yeast or citrus pulp, where they integrate over time. They become part of a food complex, no longer working alone.
5. Your journey, your nutrition
Both our Perimenopause and Menopause Complexes exemplify this approach using science-led ingredients like Saffr-Inside® Saffron and Luprenol® Hops. These well-researched botanicals can support - not cure or treat - some signs of perimenopause and menopause that can still persist when we’re doing everything right. That might be mood or sleep, or help with energy.
Different needs call for different nutritional support. Every woman’s journey through midlife is different. This is exactly why at Wild Nutrition we offer menopause-specific consultations with myself and my colleagues. Between us we have decades of experience supporting women through this stage of life.
So, remember. Food first. Supplements second. Expert support, always.
