Food-Grown® Magnesium scientific study
Discover how Food-Grown® Magnesium significantly improves sleep quality, extends sleep duration by 42 minutes, and reduces stress—backed by a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study. Learn why this natural magnesium supplement stands out for better sleep and wellness.
A true marvel mineral, Magnesium is crucial for over 300 various bodily functions, including reducing tiredness and fatigue so commonplace in modern life. However, with a whole host of factors depleting the body’s stores - ranging from current-day agriculture, stress and medication to menstrual cycles - Magnesium deficiencies are at an all-time high.
In the consistent pursuit of putting our products through their paces, in 2023, we carried out a gold standard scientific study with the School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences at the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, to assess the effects of Food-Grown® Magnesium on sleep and stress in healthy adults.
How did we achieve this?
Well-controlled and ethically conducted, the human study was a double-blind, parallel clinical trial that adhered to the highest standards and the Declaration of Helsinki guidelines, all approved by the National Institute of Integrative Medicine ethics board.
- Sleep onset & disturbance (or PSQI: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, actigraphy)
- Participants were randomly assigned to either the Food-Grown® Magnesium (80 mg/night) or placebo group (microcrystalline cellulose)
- Both groups took two capsules every night, one hour before bed.
What benefits did we look for?
While the primary objective was to understand the impact on sleep quality and duration recorded via a sleep diary, secondary measures investigated included:
- 80 healthy adults (18+) with self-reported sleep disturbances enrolled, 71 completed the study in full*
- Daytime sleepiness (ESS), anxiety/stress (DASS-21), restless legs symptoms
- Quality of life (SF-36)
- Anthropometry (BMI, weight, height).
What did we find?
35 participants took Food-Grown® Magnesium, and 36 took the placebo, with a high compliance rate of ~92% across both groups. Conducted over eight weeks (April–October 2023), measurements were recorded at the beginning and weeks 1, 4, and 8.
By the end of week 8, significant improvements were seen in:
- 80 healthy adults (18+) with self-reported sleep disturbances enrolled, 71 completed the study in full*
- Daytime sleepiness (ESS), anxiety/stress (DASS-21), restless legs symptoms
- Quality of life (SF-36)
- Anthropometry (BMI, weight, height).
SLEEP QUALITY
The Food-Grown® Magnesium group recorded a 32% improvement in sleep quality (vs. only 16% in the placebo group) and an extra 42 minutes of sleep per night.
STRESS LEVELS
Those who took Food-Grown® Magnesium reported feeling significantly less stressed than the placebo group.
While other sleep benefits experienced (by both groups, but more so by the Magnesium group), included:
-
Falling asleep faster
-
Waking up less frequently
-
A reduced need for sleep medication
-
Less daytime drowsiness.
These positive findings all demonstrate how Food-Grown® Magnesium can serve as a potential effective support for those experiencing poor sleep, mild stress or anxiety.
